It was a long night messing with webservers (and being awakened twice by Travis). It was also a challenging day at work. I’m now in the easy chair with an empty wine glass next to me, a sleeping dog nearby, and sleeping kids in the other room.
It is quite peaceful, and a good time to crack a book and relax a bit more.
Well, the MT.Net maintenance didn’t go as smoothly as I planned. It was a busy weekend without geeking out, but I managed to do some of both. I should’ve kept the geeking part until a time when I could’ve really focused. Instead, I wound up having to painstakingly recreate all my posts for the whole week: a much bigger task than I’d hoped to do.
Moral: measure twice, cut once. Learn it, live it, love it.
This weekend MT.Net will be undergoing maintenance. Don’t be surprised if your favorite source of blather can’t be reached for a time.
MT.Net management hopes to have service restored for good Sunday evening.
North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper won a temporary restraining order has been obtained against a car warranty telemarketer. Superior Court Judge Ripley Rand ordered New Jersey-based Automotive Protection to stop illegally telemarketing to North Carolinians and to stop taking their money. Things are going well. Work is going well, family life is fine. Life is good.
I realized this morning that last month marked twenty years since I set foot on the USS Elliot DD-967 and became a proper sailor.
The number of POSIX seconds since the Epoch will hit 1234567890 at 11:31:30 PM GMT next Friday, the Register reports. UNIX geeks everywhere can marvel at this milestone, and perhaps offer a toast at that time. Go to Cool Epoch Countdown to watch the clock tick away.

I take my hat off to the incredible street crews who labored throughout the night to keep our roads open. Thanks to their Herculean efforts there wasn’t one bit of snow or ice on our city streets.
I’d especially like to thank them for going the extra mile by clearing the snow and ice from my neighborhood, yard, house, and all visible surfaces – and doing so before the sun came up. Fantastic job, guys!
What refreshing words to hear our President say: “I screwed up.” In the past eight years full of colossal screwups, I never heard that other guy ever admit he made a mistake. I am happy to hear President Obama taking responsibility for his actions. The buck finally stops at the White House desk again.
I am also happy to help Obama see the error of his ways, such as his apparently continuing the policy of kidnapping … er, rendition as my buddy Scott pointed out (fortunately it looks like the L.A. Times “got punked” in the words of Harper’s Scott Horton. Salon pointed me to some analysis of these claims by Harper’s and the Washington Monthly).
