MT.Net restored?

Well, the MT.Net maintenance didn’t go as smoothly as I planned. It was a busy weekend without geeking out, but I managed to do some of both. I should’ve kept the geeking part until a time when I could’ve really focused. Instead, I wound up having to painstakingly recreate all my posts for the whole week: a much bigger task than I’d hoped to do.

Moral: measure twice, cut once. Learn it, live it, love it.

  1. Is that why they all showed up on Planet TriLUG a second time? If you read PT in google reader, all your old posts were there along with the new ones too (in case that would have been useful).

    What was the maintenance anyway?

(BTW, your link to the previous post has http://http://www…… and doesn’t work correctly.)

  2. Pretty hairy stuff. I noticed my host had mixed architecture files (x86 and x64) and the only way I figured I could straighten it out was to do a fresh install (glib was one of the affected ones).

I only had a partial backup from Saturday and a full one from a week ago. Even so there were some files that were lost, though not any anyone would notice publicly.

When it came time to reinstall, I opted to switch to Ubuntu 8.04 from CentOS 5. This added more complexity as some things in Debian/Ubuntu World just don’t make sense.

So, an awful lot of juggling in too short a timeframe. Just a typical day in the life of a sysadmin!

(And yes, PT made a great resource for restoring my posts.)

  3. Man, all of my brilliant posts have been wiped out. How is the world going to know how smart I am?

  4. Oh… measure twice … that explains the hole in the kitchen ceiling!
