Agents everywhere, but where are the buyers?

Yesterday, I met our mailman when he delivered a package.

“You moving?” he asked, squinting at the PODS container behind me.

“Yup.”

“I do real estate, too,” he replied nonchalantly.

Of course he does! It seems everyone and their brother is in real estate. More than one neighbor is. Even the train driver! Swing a stick and you’ll hit five real estate people.

And they all want to list the house. How come no one ever knows potential buyers?

Moving becomes real today

We’ve been packing boxes in the evenings until our garage was filled to the ceiling with them. Even so, our upcoming move was still not quite tangible until this morning when we got our PODS storage container delivered. Within fifteen minutes, a driver had delivered our container and expertly positioned it on our driveway. It was quite entertaining to watch the whole process.

Earthly comfort

Hallie and I saw an unusual construction truck while we were on the way to her school yesterday. A large F150 pickup truck was pulling a long trailer stacked with thick styrofoam boxes. I could tell the boxes didn’t weigh much so I wondered what was in them.

Once I read the truck’s logo I had a better idea of what it was hauling. Home Energy, Inc.. was on the way to install one of their energy-efficient heating and cooling systems. Home Energy sells solar water heating systems as well as Earthlinked geothermal heating and cooling systems for homes.

Bus stops and the economy

I went for another pre-dawn walk today, passing a crowd of neighborhood high-schoolers waiting for the bus when a thought occurred to me: where are these kids going to find jobs?

Why was this even a question? I don’t know why I should be concerned but I am. There was never any question for me that I would find good employment but I could not help but feel pessimistic about these kids’ opportunities.

If I was a kid on the verge of entering this job market, my choices would be frighteningly few indeed. I feel for them.

Aww yeah

Got to Hallie’s school early so I could drop her off right when the carpool lane opened, took a left out of the lot and navigated my way up East Street through Oakwood to snag a free parking space, and then smirked as I passed the pay parking lot, arriving at the office right on time.

I love it when a plan comes together.

Not-new home sales also waste water

With the City Council on the verge of imposing Stage 2 water restrictions, much has been said about the water wasted when new developments flush their new water lines. I realized last week how much water gets wasted when a house gets sold: any old house, not just a new one.

We hired a home inspector to thoroughly inspect our new home. The water system is part of the inspection, so the inspector cranked on the faucets and let them all run for over an hour as he checked the system for leaks. It made me cringe to see how much water was going down the drain, and yet I certainly wanted any leaks to be discovered. I just wish there was another way to accomplish this without so much waste.

Then again, last summer when I was still drought-stupid I would habitually water the lawn for 3 hours with two hoses going full blast. I wasted far more water doing that than any home inspection could…

New job update

The new job is going okay after two days. I’m getting the firehose treatment when it comes to learning the product. Everything is a bit abstract as most of the servers and data is in Germany. Not having a company laptop yet also keeps me from poking around more.

Starting the day off right

I woke up before dawn this morning, pulled on my sneakers, and went for a walk around the neighborhood. I’ve become way too lazy in the past few months and its starting to show around my waistline, so I’m going back to regular exercise beginning today.

The weather was perfect for walking, too, with temperatures in the 50s and winds calm. I took a lap around Hobhouse Circle before taking the greenway to Camp Durant Road and back. It was a short circuit (ha!) but it was a start.

Transitions

Friday was also my last day with Zenoss. I thought I might be with them for a long ride but my priorities simply changed within the last few months. I’ve been working from home pretty much exclusively and felt I needed more day-to-day interaction in order to be successful in that position. While I won’t be an employee anymore, I will remain a huge advocate of the product. In fact, I hope to continue to conduct presentations to interested user groups whenever possible.
