Driver who hit Jason Ray indicted

The driver who struck and killed UNC student Jason Ray has been indicted by a New Jersey jury for causing death while driving without a license. Armen Hovsepian initially claimed to be a passenger in the SUV driven by his father but a tip came in that placed him behind the wheel. Hovsepian could face up to five years in prison if convicted.

MT.Net wrote many times before about Jason Ray due to the conversations my wife Kelly had with him shortly before he passed away. Ray performed as the UNC mascot Rameses for three years and was expected to perform at a charity event Kelly was organizing.

More Jason Ray

Jason Ray is still touching lives. The UNC student who performed as the UNC mascot Rameses (and of whom I wrote about before) may have died in March but parts of him live on. Ray’s organs have been distributed to over 80 people, according to the Charlotte Observer this morning.

Tonight ESPN will air the story of Jason Ray, called “Ray of Hope.” I hope his story inspires more people to become organ donors.

I’m an organ donor. Are you?

Local Events To Honor UNC Student Jason Ray

According to WRAL, there will be two local events to remember Jason Ray, the UNC student who portrayed UNC mascot Rameses who died after being hit by a car last month:

A celebration of the life of Jason Ray will be held Tuesday from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Carolina Club of the George Watts Hill Alumni Building.

Also, a concert in his honor will be performed at the Cat’s Cradle April 17th. The show will raise money for the Jason Ray Memorial Fund.

UNC Mascot Jason Ray In Coma

Kelly’s volunteer duties with the March of Dimes involve inviting the area team mascots to appear at the WalkAmerica walk in April. She wound up exchanging emails with Jason Ray, who protrays UNC’s mascot, Rameses.

Kelly was shocked to hear that Jason was hit by a car Friday and critically injured. He’s now in a coma and showing few signs of life.

Please keep Jason and his family in your thoughts and prayers, y’all.

[Update (3/26):] Jason Ray passed away this morning. Sad. See the link above for memorial information.

Slashdotted By Google

Monday I had the mixed blessing be the top Google search result for the query “Jason Ray UNC.” I was pleased to get lots of visitors but was sad that the reason they visited was because Jason died.

When I noticed the hit count for my first entry about Jason, I thought it prudent to update the post with information on where donations could be sent. I hope people took advantage of that.

That first post instantly became the most-read MT.Net post ever, with close to 3000 views. I only wish the circumstances were a little better. I think Jason posted a lot to the walled-off, so-called “social networking” sites like Facebook and Myspace but because Google doesn’t venture there few results came back for his own pages.

Highlights of 2007: Blog homeruns

This list naturally draws most of its material from the blog. Thus, it makes sense to recognize the posts and changes that are significant here at MT.Net.

From the propeller-head side, I migrated my blog’s software from its old Drupal beginnings to WordPress. With this change came the addition to the archives of my very first blog posts, originally posted in some of the first primitive blogging software, bplog. I think its fun to read how my blogging has progressed over the years.

Graffiti delete-y?

Since my blog posting about the Beltline graffiti attracted so much attention, I thought it only right that I publicly thank the N.C. DOT for being on the case. I sent this email to them this past Thursday:

Mr. Jones,

I see that graffiti around the I-440 Beltline is being painted over. Thanks to you and the NCDOT for your prompt service in addressing this. Already it has made a huge difference in Raleigh’s appearance. I do appreciate it!

Regards,

Mark Turner

This drew this prompt response from Mr. Brandon Jones:

Weekends with the family

It was a fun day. Went to my niece Hadley’s birthday party with the family. Got to visit with my family and friends there, including running into my former Oculan coworker Matt “Jason” Pressley. Found out his kids will be going to Hallie’s school, Conn, as well, so we’ll run into each other far more often now.

After getting back (and jumping all over the inflatable house at the kids’ party), we got prepped to head to the pool but had to leave the pool 30 seconds after getting in when thunder was heard. We spent some time at home spraying down the kids in the front yard but then returned to the pool for the last hour they were open.

Dinner, then tired kids were tucked in. Kelly and I watched Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story and laughed through it. It was a dead-on satire of the recent Johnny Cash and Ray Charles biopics.

Tomorrow the kids go to a playdate and I get some time to catch up on some projects. Then we’re likely to be at the pool again in the afternoon.

It sure is great to have the family together again!
