MythTV addons

A few MythTV addons I’ve been contemplating:

HDHomeRun: A networked HDTV tuner with two (count ’em, two!) tuner cards: one for OTA HDTV signals and one for HDTV cable signals. MythTV can use these right out of the box to schedule recordings. Plus, the number of tuners is only limited by network bandwidth so you can easily create a MythTV-based headend. I’m thinking of pairing one of these up with MythTV running on my NSLU2 for a super-quiet, super-efficient MythTV setup. Not bad for $170.

Global Warming

Lately I’ve been wondering what impact this situation has on global warming. I’m sure its a dramatic one, and one that’s probably often overlooked.

Rain!

We got rain this afternoon. I was practically dancing, though I’m kicking myself for not already hooking up the water tank I recently bought.

The MT.Net weather station says close to an inch of rain fell. Its a drop in the bucket, drought-wise, but every little bit helps.

Woz’s next thing: energy efficient houses

Steve Wozniak, the legendary engineer who created the Apple computer, has now focused his considerable talent on creating more energy efficient houses.

Woz has always been a huge proponent of engineering efficiency. This drove him to design the Apple do some miraculous things with a mere handful of parts – a fraction of what competitiors used. Its no surprise then that he’s drawn to the clever tricks that can be used to heat and cool homes.

One in Four Read No Books Last Year

Like my buddy Chris, I find this deeply troubling. I always have a book to read, though I don’t have as much time to read it as I’d like. I don’t think I’d ever have enough time to spend reading. I’d happily spend hours a day reading given the chance.

I picked this up from my mother, who unfailingly has a stack of thick books next to the couch at any point. Our kids have picked up the habit, too. They get an hour of storytime each day.

I know people today live active lives, but please! If you don’t have time for even one book, something’s majorly wrong.
