The Brewery and Farmhouse to be razed

I’m bummed to learn that The Brewery, one of Raleigh’s oldest music venues, is closing its doors for good this weekend. The building’s been bought and will be razed for a mixed-use development. The last band will take the stage Friday evening.

I’ve seen many shows at the Brewery and made some fantastic memories there. It was small (or shall we say, intimate) and had a lacking beer selection, but those are about its only faults. You could stand anywhere in the room and have a great view of the band. And it had the best sound guy anywhere: the bands always sounded great. I’ve seen many local and national acts there: Cracker, Mojo Nixon, Whiskeytown, Dig, Southern Culture On The Skids, and many, many others.

Mergers

The economic downturn is causing a lot of companies to either merge or else go belly-up. Watch for these consolidations in 2008:

1.) Hale Business Systems, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Fuller Brush, and W. R. Grace Co. Will merge and become: Hale, Mary, Fuller, Grace.

2.) PolyGram Records, Warner Bros., and Zesta Crackers join forces and become: Poly, Warner Cracker.

3.) 3M will merge with Goodyear and become: MMMGood.

4. Zippo Manufacturing, Audi Motors, Dofasco, and Dakota Mining will merge and become: ZipAudiDoDa

UCLUG talk on Zenoss

The talk last night at UCLUG about Zenoss went well, with the exception of finding the place a little after the meeting had already started. Fortunately I was the second act, so nobody noticed.

I was fired up about speaking and it showed. I was funny and engaging and improvised a few clever wisecracks here and there. It didn’t hurt that there was a familiar face in the crowd: my former Raritan coworker Wes Yates, a wisecracker himself.

I’ve got to find more speaking gigs, or join one of the Toastmasters groups here. Speaking to groups (and especially interacting with them) is a heck of a lot of fun.

About the Sargasso Sea

When I posted the Cracker song Be My Love yesterday, I became curious about the Sargasso Sea. Being a sailor, I pride myself on knowing where various seas are but I’d never heard of this one. No wonder: the Sargasso Sea is the only sea without shores.

Be My Love

Happy Valentine’s Day! I love the spooky, carnivalesque feel to this song.

Be My Love
Cracker
Garage D’or

I dream a white bright light
In endless fevered night
A birdwing brush across my back, you say to me
You could be my love

Annoyance Calls

For the past few weeks we haven’t just been getting car warranty calls. Another annoying situation has established itself where we’ll get a hang-up call at 9:15 PM on Sunday evenings, followed by one about 6 minutes later. Then, at 4:25 AM on Monday morning the phone will ring again and – just like the other calls – there will be nothing but a dial tone.

I’ve since configured Asterisk to block these calls so they will no longer get through. Even so, I plan to see how good the crackerjacks at AT&T are at tracking them down by filing a complaint with them. Back in my BBS sysop’ing days, I had a phone number to the phone company group that could track any number. I’m sure I can find the AT&T equivalent with a little effort.

This has gone on for weeks now and its time to fight back.

Weekend recap

I’m closing in on the last minutes of the weekend. It was a good one with lots of Daddy time with the kids. Kelly took Hallie to see The Nutcracker Saturday morning, leaving Travis and me to work on some projects. We went to Lowes to pick up mulch and a few other items and returned home to finish our flowerbed project around the mailbox. After naps for the kids, we had dinner with our friends yesterday evening and had a great time.

Vista piracy way down – for good reason

Microsoft is doing away with the “kill switch” feature in Microsoft Vista, according to the Beeb. According to Microsoft, its anti-piracy features have served their purpose:

Microsoft said efforts to tackle piracy had seen numbers of fake copies of Vista at half the level of XP, the previous Windows operating system.

What doesn’t get mentioned is that perhaps more people prefer XP over Vista, hmm?

Anti-piracy tools have never, ever been a match for determined crackers. Pirates consider these measures to be mere speed bumps. In light of this, how bad does an operating system have to be to make even pirates not interested in it?

What’s Chinese for “Cease Fire!?”

I had a great day at the Great Wall of China. I’ll post about that in a moment.

On the way back, I took our tour guide’s advice and gave up a ride back to my hotel in favor of walking around the local markets. I had an enjoyable time browsing the stores, bookstores, and malls. I ate some decent pizza at the food court before hopping on to the subway for a trip back to my hotel.

The subway was easy to navigate. Soon I was at my stop, one block from my hotel. At that point, however, I was stymied. I had no idea which direction to go and could not find anyone near the subway stop who spoke English.

What’s more, there were fireworks going off everywhere, celebrating the end of Spring Festival. And I’m not talking little bottle rockets or sparklers here, either. I’m talking huge, commercial-grade rockets and firecrackers. It was like frickin’ downtown Baghdad! Dark sidewalks would explode in a flash of light as another meter-long package of firecrackers went off. Bottle rockets screamed above my head. A gale-force wind is also blowing: perfect for sweeping out the Year of the Dog and ushering in the Year of the Pig, but not conducive to navigating an urban fireworks battlefield.

I walked as many blocks as I dared before deciding I was hopelessly lost and in danger of losing a limb or eye. The next stop was to flag down a taxi to shepherd me back to my hotel. I got a card from the hotel with a rudimentary map of the city and some Chinese phrases. I’ve been keeping it with me, thinking the Chinese characters on it was enough to get me back.

I was wrong. The first cabbie shook his head and kicked me out of his taxi. The second was more accomodating but equally clueless about which direction to go. After stopping his cab three times to ask directions of passersby I finally pointed in a direction and said “go.” I pointed right a the next street and lo and behold the Holiday Inn Central Plaza appeared on the horizon. I’ve never been so happy to see a Holiday Inn!

I’m back in my hotel and the war is still going on outside. The wind is gusting so strongly it is making my window whistle louder than the din outside, if you can believe it. I can see now I took the wrong card: there is a taxi card the recptionist gave me for my trip to dinner last night which has detailed hotel directions in Chinese. I’ll know now to take that one with me on my journeys.

I’ll also remember not to choose to wander around on the last night of the Chinese Spring Festival!
