Zombiehead

I woke up from a fitful night of sleep at 3 AM and never fully went back to sleep. I’ve thus felt like a zombie all day, especially this evening when I had to help coach Travis’s basketball team.

It’s now book time and then bedtime for me. ‘Night all!

Family mountain biking

The weather was a beautiful, balmy partly sunny and 70 degrees, so we took advantage of it by heading out for the mountain bike trails at Lake Crabtree for a little exercise. We had an absolute blast!

Travis had impressed me earlier this week with the way he was riding the hills around the “creek” area after school. That showed me he might be ready for some off-road biking. Turns out not only he was ready, but Hallie as well!

We hopped off our bikes to watch people play in the field and soon found ourselves wrapped up in an impromptu soccer game with a kid and his family. Before we knew it it was approaching 5 PM and we had biked and run far longer than we ever expected we could!

It was a fantastic family day and a great antidote to the brutally-cold start we had to the week. Gotta love winter in North Carolina!

Laptop disaster

Last night I was lunging towards a misbehaving dog when I knocked my laptop onto the floor.

Oops. Fortunately only the hard drive appeared to be damaged, but the fact that the drive was less than a month old made me feel really, really stupid. On the plus side, I had a backup that was less than a month old so I didn’t lose much.

I’ve got a new drive which I’m loading up with my old files right now so I’ll be back up and running again in no time. And from now on I’ll be a bit more careful!

Hello 2012

The Acorn drops in Raleigh on New Years Eve 2011 at 7 PM

Happy 2012, everyone! I expect it to be a great year.

I’ve heard some saying “good riddance” to 2011, calling it a “tough year,” but I don’t see it that way. The way I see it, any year in which you make it to the end is a good year.

I wish you peace, prosperity, and happiness in 2012!

Hall of Human Origins

Me as Homo neanderthalensis

The day after Christmas, Kelly and I spent the day in downtown DC, checking out museums. While Kelly wanted to see the Hirshhorn Museum, I was fascinated by the National Museum of Natural History. All the time I lived in Great Falls, VA, I never once ventured inside this museum until yesterday.

While the dinosaur bones were intriguing to me, I was really fascinated by the Hall of Human Origins showing the evolution of man over millions of years. I’ve long been fascinated by the thought of human species that once co-occupied the earth and here I was getting my first look at them.

Steve Jobs bio

I finally got my hands on Walter Isaacson’s biography of Steve Jobs. Expect light blogging until I work my way through it!

Jupiter the cat

Jupiter the cat

For the past few months, I’d been seeing a streak of orange darting among the neighborhood flowerbeds. This mysterious creature kept well away from people, though. After chasing it out of our backyard one day, I became curious and decided to find out more about this kitten.

I sent a few emails to the neighbors, asking if anyone claimed it. When I got responses back, telling me my neighbors were also feeding this stray cat, I hatched a plan to get the cat neutered and vaccinated.

Lonelier street

McNultys' moving van

I watched with sadness today as our next-door neighbors, the McNultys, moved out. I remember how welcome they made us feel when we moved in almost four years ago. Now their house stands empty and our little end of Tonsler Drive has gotten a bit lonelier.

Life is full of moments where everything can change in an instant. The death of a loved one, or a pet, or when good friends move away. They knock you out of your happy slumber, sudden reminders that nothing in this life is permanent.

You’d better enjoy every moment in life because they’re here and they’re gone. All too soon.

Sniffling

Been a busy, fun weekend but I’m beat. I’ve had a cold for the past few weeks and it’s really starting to become a drag.

I spent some time Saturday working on my satellite dish. I also helped host a playdate for my son and his friend. Then I leaf-blowed the leaves in the back yard.

Later, we went to Raleigh’s Winterfest celebrations last evening. We had fun, even the kids. Today we went for a hike at Falls Lake. It was a short-ish hike but Kelly and I felt worn out afterwards. It seemed much more vigorous than we expected.

I’m on my way to bed soon in the hopes that tonight’s sleep refreshes me. It’s going to be a busy week with the city council swearing-in ceremony, a dentist appointment, a planning meeting, a park dedication, and a Raleigh CAC holiday party – all this week. Oh, and I have some work mixed in there as well!
