Hall of Human Origins

Me as Homo neanderthalensis

The day after Christmas, Kelly and I spent the day in downtown DC, checking out museums. While Kelly wanted to see the Hirshhorn Museum, I was fascinated by the National Museum of Natural History. All the time I lived in Great Falls, VA, I never once ventured inside this museum until yesterday.

While the dinosaur bones were intriguing to me, I was really fascinated by the Hall of Human Origins showing the evolution of man over millions of years. I’ve long been fascinated by the thought of human species that once co-occupied the earth and here I was getting my first look at them.

I particularly enjoyed John Gurche’s forensic reconstructions of ancient human species. Looking into the eyes of ancient man was unforgettable. I could imagine how they lived.

I hope to learn more about early humans at the library. One day I hope to visit some of the excavation sites, too.

  1. We visited the San Diego Museum of Man over Thanksgiving and they have an amazing collection of stuff (including shrunken heads which really freaked me out!!!).

I got Angus the new Richard Dawkins book “The Magic of Reality” for Xmas … chapter 2: Who was the first person? really does a good job of explaining early man.
