Jury don’ty

My scheduled jury duty has been bumped once again, I just found out. The computerized voice tells me I don’t report until Wednesday. I wonder what the deal is. I’d like to go and get it over with but this constant rescheduling is getting annoying. I’m happy to serve as long as I know roughly what to expect.

Also, the instructions tell me to leave my books, phones, laptop, etc in the car. What the heck am I supposed to do while I’m waiting? I’m worried that waiting will be Death By A Thousand Infomercials and I’ll have no avenue of escape. Certainly it makes blogging challenging, though if I can snag a paper and pen I’ll be set.

Weekend? What weekend?

You know, when you spend part of your weekend with your kid in the ER, part of it in the office mucking with office network (and failing), part of it at home mucking with the office network (and failing again), and the time in-between desperately trying to sleep but largely failing, you begin to wonder if you had a weekend at all.

All this and I’ve got jury duty this week (and possibly the following two weeks), though I don’t report until Tuesday. Life just doesn’t slow down, does it?

iPoof

Saturday, I joined the family in the Ridge Road pool just one minute before the lifeguards called everyone out for approaching thunderstorms. I hadn’t even had time to get my chest wet. I did, however, have time to dunk my iPod Shuffle, which was hiding in my bathing suit pocket. It was supposed to stay in the car but sometimes it doesn’t listen.

I think its goose is cooked. I’m a little sad, but them’s the breaks.

Worn out

Wow, am I ready for bed already! Its been a very busy weekend, to say the least.

Friday afternoon, Kelly’s parents arrived to spend the weekend with us. We all went out to Royal India for dinner Friday evening. The next morning Kelly and I fixed breakfast for everyone before we headed downtown to watch the house moves.

The first house was already across the street and the second was just crossing the road by the time we got there around 10:30. They didn’t move much for the next hour, though we were there for one spectacular tire-blowing. Bam! That thing blew up like a bomb! Of course, the blown tire meant all the work had to grind to a halt while the tire was replaced. Having the patience of a saint must be a job requirement of house movers.

I’ve been summoned

I opened the mailbox this afternoon to find a letter which says “United States District Court.” That’s right, I’ve been summoned for jury duty.

The District Court has been after me for a while, actually. The last summons I received had me reporting for duty the day Travis was born! I was excused that time, for obvious reasons, but I told them I’d welcome service at another time. They do a fine job of keeping track of folks, because one of the very first pieces of mail I received at our new address in April was a jury duty questionnaire.

The only other time I’ve been summoned was in 1996. That was for a local case and it happened the day my company got its new phone system. Nothing was working right and as the IT manager responsible for cleaning up the mess, I got excused. So I suppose I’m due. In fact, maybe long overdue.

My summons says I’m in for a three-week term starting September 8th. Apparently it won’t actually last that long, as most trials are done in 3 to 5 days. My guess is it will probably be some boring case dealing with corporate law, but who knows.

Of course, the odds that I will be able to blog during my service are slim to none, which will be a challenge for me but it beats being in contempt of court (heh). I hope to write about the experience afterward, however. Since I enjoy learning about the law this should be at least a little fun.

Home again

We are back again after three days at Carolina Beach. Our beach house was great except for two things: the blinds in the master bedroom leaked like a sieve and there was no Internet access.

I’ll post a more complete update over the weekend. For now its time to get my book and relax.

Home tonight

We got back this evening for an overnight stay in Raleigh before heading to the coast. Our timing put us into RTP right before 5PM, meaning we ran smack into rush-hour traffic. Gazing at the sea of brake-lights heading east, I thanked my lucky stars once again for my bicycle commute!

We stopped by Linville Caverns on the way home. The caverns didn’t disappoint, being sufficiently dark, damp, and stalagtite-y to keep us entertained. I expected there to be bigger rooms here and there but that’s not the way caves work. Still, it was a fun diversion.

Greetings from 2,756 feet

We’re on Gateway Mountain now, just outside of Old Fort, NC on the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Old Fort is exit 73 off of I-40, about 220 miles from Raleigh pavement-wise. We’re in a house overlooking the gorgeous mountains. Its surrounded by woods and up a quite-steep one-lane road.

I’d tell you how quiet it is here but the truth is the cicadas made a big racket last night. We must be surrounded by them. Even so, I think we’ll try sleeping with the windows open, because country noises can be soothing, too.
