Mayor Charles Meeker held a press conference today to urge everyone to limit their water use to 25 gallons per person. Almost on cue, the comments on WRAL’s website went through the roof, with 361 posted as of this writing. Its as if people are just waking up to the fact that, oh, FALLS LAKE IS JUST A MUDDY HOLE NOW!!!

Rainwater Solutions
Decided to get out of the house for a change on Thursday. My destination was Raleigh’s Rainwater Solutions, makers of rain barrels and cisterns. Having had a water tank for months now (a full one, I might add), I wanted to see what the next step up would be.

Cheviot Hills to become Chevrolet Hills
When I drive home on Capital Boulevard from a trip into town, my eyes always drift over to the old Cheviot Hills Golf Course, which has sat idle since June of 2006 after being sold to car salesmen. The property has always intrigued me for some reason. Especially the clubhouse, portions of which were built in the 1800s.

Wasteful packaging
I got a cool LED book light for Christmas. It’s small, lightweight, and very bright: pretty much the way a booklight is supposed to be. The only real problem is the packaging it came in: it’s a huge, empty plastic box.

Rain
Looks like we got a total of 1.06 of rain yesterday (midnight to midnight). Unlike other rains, I wasn’t able to capture any of it in Lake Turner as I’m in Virginia now.
There is a person in Garner selling 300-gallon plastic tanks, though, and I’m considering picking up another one. Can’t have enough rainwater, y’know.
The Story of Stuff
Matt sent this to me this morning. It’s a 20-minute-long Flash movie explaining how your stuff gets to you and why that process is not sustainable. Living near the North Wake Landfill as I do, I can’t help but wonder how much of that big pile of garbage could’ve been avoided.
Check out the Story of Stuff and begin thinking of ways we can be living a little more responsibly on our planet (hint: vote with your wallet).
Filter changing time
If your home’s air filters are so clogged that they’re actually whistling when your heater runs, it may be time to change them.
Of course, mine weren’t that bad, you know. I’m talking theoretically.
Ahem. Hey, look at the ponies!
Water conservation by the numbers
We got out first water bill in two months yesterday. I’m proud to say our water use has plummeted dramatically. Our last bill, covering August through September, was $103 and our October-November bill is $65. That’s a drop of almost 40 percent!

Record-breaking warmth
We’re in the midst of an unusual December heat wave. Yesterday MT.Net’s weather station recorded a temperature of 84 degrees. I find it very odd hearing all of my neighbor’s air conditioners roaring away this time of year. Today is forecast to be even hotter.
There are some people who still doubt the world’s weather is askew. Won’t be long before we’re telling our grandkids: “I remember when winters used to be cold…”
Compostin’
Hearing the city’s leaf-vacuum truck making its rounds this morning reminded me of a project we completed this weekend. Saturday’s weather was superb, so while Kelly and Hallie attended a birthday party, Travis and i spent the morning raking (and leafblowing) leaves. Travis really enjoyed aiming the leafblower as we cleaned the yard. He especially enjoyed jumping into the leaf piles we created!
