Raleigh will soon have its own business startup ‘Hub’

HUB Raleigh

It looks like Raleigh may have a place for startups to get started after all, about a year after I mentioned it here. I’m looking forward to learning more about HUB Raleigh!

Frustrated by lack of respectable, low-cost office space and support of other new and emerging business owners, a team of entrepreneurs in Raleigh is launching an equivalent of Durham’s “American Underground.”

Led by Brooks Bell, owner of her own rapidly growing high-tech integration business, and Christopher Gergen, who launched the Bull City Forward business program in Durham, “HUB Raleigh” is set to open on Sept. 15 at 711 Hillsborough Street.

US warns China on South China Sea moves

Interesting. I’m glad America still has a strong Navy!

The Obama administration has warned China against further moves to tighten control over a disputed section of the South China Sea, as tensions rose in the flashpoint region.

In a statement, the US State Department cautioned China about its addition of a military garrison and civilian officials near the contested Scarborough Reef and its use of barriers to deny access to foreign ships.

These moves "run counter to collaborative diplomatic efforts to resolve differences and risk further escalating tensions in the region", said the statement, issued early on Friday morning and attributed to Patrick Ventrell, the acting deputy spokesman.

Two year vs. four year council terms

A friend asked me recently what I thought about the Raleigh City Council’s consideration of moving to four year terms rather than its current two.

Upon hearing District B councilor John Odom bring it up a few months ago, I thought it makes sense. I can see how it makes sense to stay focused on the public’s work, rather than focused on what it takes to win the next election. Some say a longer-term outlook also lends it self to smarter longer-term growth. Four year terms make sense to me.

Letters to Grandma: 10 Nov 1991

[Note: Read this post first for an introduction.]

I wrote this while in the Persian Gulf, where my ship spent three months doing donuts. This was my second trip to the Gulf and, as I wrote below, I had gotten used to the routine. Hours of boredom punctuated by seconds of sheer terror. Fortunately, the closest I came to combat was watching as our deployed SEAL team safely detonated a wayward Iraqi mine.

I still remember pointing the ship’s “Big Eyes” binoculars towards a passing Iranian ferry, fascinated by wonder evident on the faces of the passengers. They looked like everyday people, and I wondered why our two countries couldn’t just get along.

At the time I really was hitting my stride with the Navy. I think it’s because I was finally getting a chance to lead. Those lessons are still paying off today.
