Crystal Ball
Who is the man I see
where I’m supposed to be?
I lost my heart, I buried it too deep
under the iron sea.
Oh, crystal ball, crystal ball,
Save us all, tell me life is beautiful,
Mirror, mirror on the wall.
Lines ever more unclear,
Not sure I’m even here,
The more I look the more I think that I’m
starting to disappear.

U2 and traffic
So the so-called biggest band in the world played in Raleigh Saturday and the biggest story today is how awful the traffic management was.
I’m kinda indifferent to U2 myself, though many of my friends went to the show and enjoyed it. Personally, I would have to like U2 a lot more to wait 4 hours in traffic and see them with 60,000 other fans.
U2 yesterday and today
U2 plays Carter-Finley Stadium tomorrow night, so I asked Kelly if she’s ever seen them. She said she had, so I jokingly asked her how much her ticket cost. That sent her marching into the attic to fetch a handful of ticket stubs. Proof!
Tickets for tomorrow night’s show start at $100. Kelly saw them play at Maryland’s Capital Centre in 1985 for a whopping $13.50! That’s less than the Ticketmaster fees tacked on to tomorrow night’s show. Even tomorrow’s $20 parking fee is more expensive!
In like McGuinn
Guitar legend Roger McGuinn is also an accomplished techie, and maintains a blog devoted solely to his various gadgets. Last month, Roger shared his journey into solar power.
What started with the purchase of a small solar panel to charge his cell phone led to him to fully convert his home to solar power. In doing so, he didn’t give up anything but a power bill: he’s got enough juice to power his two refrigerators and 5-ton air conditioner.
An amazing set of alternative-energy rebates and deals are being offered this fall to North Carolina residents. I’ll post about these soon but the deals have me seriously considering following Roger’s lead and putting panels on our roof.
The Federal Commission of T-Pain
Auto-Tune The News, which edits news clips through with Apple’s Auto-Tune to create music videos, has released it’s latest episode, this time featuring T-Pain himself. Check it out!
Bonus! Evan Gregory, who is part of the Gregory Brothers who created Auto-Tune the News, once delivered a commencement address partially in pirate. Saturday is International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Arrrrrrr!
I’m on a Boat
My friend Jamie sent a link today to a music video made by officers of the USS John Paul Jones (DDG-53). It’s set to the parody rap song I’m on a Boat by The Lonely Island (YouTube). The John Paul Jones version is a pretty good copy, considering the guys were limited in their props.
This video and another version of I’m on a Boat made by different sailors goes to show you what pulling six months worth of 12-hour shifts can do to one’s sanity. It’s a long way back from the Persian Gulf to California and sailors get a little slap happy. This is the kind of thing I would’ve put together on the end of a deployment if I’d had a MacBook back then.
Check out this version of Pump It by the VAW-116 Sunkings and the British Royal Navy doing Bohemian Rhapsody. Good times.
Warning: some videos contain explicit language.
Update 7 Oct 2009: The John Paul Jones video is also available here.
No evil genius’s lair is complete without one
Check out this unbelievable pipe organ built in the house across the street of my friend and fellow Wikipedia contributor Ken Thomas.
Says Ken:
Apparently the guy was a dentist and a fairly high-ranking officer in the Army. He retired after 30 years, and moved to Lenoir. I gather he had both money and time on his hands, and according to my tour guide “He just really liked pipe organs.” She didn’t come right out and say it, but I could tell from her responses that he may have been a little bit eccentric too. Considering what I was looking at, that little data nugget wasn’t exactly a shocking revelation.
I’ve seen pipe organs before, such as the one at the Rosario Resort on Orcas Island and this one appears to have homemade pipes.
I’d consider patching those hoses myself just to hear it play!
We’re Not Getting Any Younger
Another gem Pandora brought me. What a great pop song.
We’re Not Getting Any Younger (free mp3 from ReverbNation)
Color Theory
I say I should take you home but you want to stay here
On the beach all alone with our blankets and beer
In the dark how we ache to fulfill this hunger
Cherish it now cause we’re not getting any younger
Ashes in fire pits and fires in our hearts as we move
Crashing waves in an urgent and quickening groove
Consummating the end of a perfect summer
Cherish it now cause we’re not getting any younger

Cable TV
Now you’ve been working so hard
Running in circles
Like a robot shorting circuits
Like it’s set to blow
I’ve gotta make an appointment
Just to kiss you
Baby I’m not complaining
But I’ve got to know
