One Wake County park already smoke-free

Yates Mill

The family and I were thinking of checking out Historic Yates Mill Park today: a fully-restored mill and park which Wake County Parks and Recreation leased from N.C. State University in 2001. While looking through the park information, I was drawn to the list of prohibited items (emphasis mine):

Rules and Regulations
Safety and enjoyment go hand in hand at Historic Yates Mill County Park. The following rules and regulations have been established to ensure a safe and pleasant visit.

1. Parking in designated areas only – no roadside parking.

5. The following are prohibited:
1. Smoking
2. Hunting
3. Firearms and explosives of any kind
4. Open fires of any kind unless special permission is given by park staff
5. Pets except those that are trained assistance animals
6. Alcoholic beverages
7. Horses, Bicycles and off-road vehicles
….

The downloadable park brochure goes even further in its explanation:

4. DUE TO THE SENSITIVE NATURE OF THE PARK, THE FOLLOWING ARE PROHIBITED:
– Pets (excluding assistance animals)
– Bank fishing
– Smoking
– Alcoholic beverages
– Open fires of any kind
– Firearms and explosives of any kind
– Amplified music
– Horses, bicycles and off-road vehicles
….

I was not aware until now that there was a park in Wake County that already prohibited smoking. I’ll ask the staff there today whether that’s ever been any problems with this policy and how they’ve handled it.

Update 10:09 PM: Read about Yates Mill’s successful no-smoking policy.
