Highlights of 2010: room remodel

Painting crew

This fall brought us more room in our home, as we turned some of our unfinished attic space into a new room. This came in very handy when I began working from home and now we have a room for guests.

When we moved into our home we saw that some of our attic was mostly framed for a room, so we got a few quotes from local contractors to see what it would take to finish it. When the quotes came in higher than we expected we put our remodel off. Then when I got a job working mostly from home it became clear that a separate office would be important.

There are rough spots in every job. Since most of the framing was already done, we expected a week’s worth of work to complete it. However, due to snafus in the permitting process and other delays, the project took too weeks. I laughed when the drywall crew put a sheet of drywall right over the inspection permit card, leaving the thumbtack showing through the wall.

That'll buff out.

The results, though, have been worth the work! I love having my desk parked in front of two big windows, where I can keep an eye on the neighborhood while I work. The room’s closet is very roomy and has been wired for networking and other gear. I hope to turn it into a little recording booth some day. And of course its great to have a place for our guests to stay!

Kelly and I have been wondering why we didn’t do this sooner!
