Amazon does it better

amazonI decided to retire my old laser printer when it wore out its latest toner cartridge and the thought of paying $80 to order another cartridge didn’t appeal. I bought a popular Brother model from Amazon Thursday evening, not expecting to see it until today.

Instead, it arrived on my front porch Saturday morning at 9 AM – and that’s with Amazon’s free shipping. I’m still blown away at how I can order a printer with a few clicks, pay 30% less than at the local warehouse club, pay no shipping on a 26 pound shipment, and 36 hours later it’s in my hands.

Amazon runs one tight ship, my friends. They beat all I’ve ever seen.

  1. I agree with you about Amazon.com. Great company. Good prices and I’ve never had the shipping take as long as they said it would.

My Laserjet’s cartridge started going out so I ordered one through them. Got a “reconditioned” one (refilled) for $22. Works fine and came in 3 days.

I assume you also have their credit card? I do and I love the $25 certificates I get from them every couple of months.

  2. Be careful with “Brother” … I swore off that brand years ago when their software went in and took over my computer and slowed it way down … after a few years of this I destroyed that Printer-Fax “Office Space” style … and it felt GOOD!!!

  3. I avoid using the manufacturer’s printer drivers whenever possible. That’s not always possible with some USB printers.

Early Brother printers didn’t have enough smarts on their own to render print pages. Their drivers did most of the heavy lifting, making the printer have less electronics but also making the printer incompatible with Macs, Linux, and all other OSs.

This new Brother printer (HL-5250DN) has built-in networking and a handful of network printing protocols built-in. It can be used from ANYTHING, with no drivers needed, and it has an awesome web-based settings and status page. It really rocks!

Ron: I don’t have the Amazon card but a few $25 gift certificates could change my mind!

Update: I see the printer is now priced $50 higher and with $32 of shipping costs. I wonder if the pricing I got was a fluke!

  4. We used this model Brother laser printer at my last job. It was fast, reliable, and inexpensive. Good choice!

  5. The only thing I was concerned about before buying it was the reports that it drew excessive power when it was warming up. Some reviews said the printer would trigger their UPS system (plugged in next to the printer, not powering the printer itself).

I have my printer plugged in at the same outlet as my UPS and was happy to see that it didn’t cause my UPS to trip. So far I love it!
