in Checking In

Fun weekend

It’s been a fun 72 hours. I began it Friday afternoon with my GPS talk at Conn. Then I did some volunteer work at the Rhine.

Saturday morning the family and I puttered around the house. Around lunchtime, I brought the last of the donations I’d collected over to my neighbor, recruiting my neighbor for assistance. She seemed happy and settled in her new place.

After returning from that errand, I met Kelly and the kids at the ice rink, where I cheered the family on from the sidelines as they whipped past (my ankle is still feeling a bit gimpy so I have opted not to join them lately). It was fun watching how Hallie and Travis have taken to skating.

Travis was grumpy after skating, so I dreamed up a project we both could work on: setting up another satellite dish. He’d enjoyed helping me with the last one, so off we went. After some sighting and aiming, we didn’t get a signal we could use (our linear LNB appears broken), but we had fun workign on the project together.

Kelly and I got the kids supper and ready for bed just in time for the babysitter to arrive. We then walked to downtown where we met our neighbors for some bar-hopping around Raleigh. It was a blast! I laughed harder last night than I’ve laughed in a long, long time. We bailed early as the sitter meter was running, which is unfortunate as we were enjoying ourselves so. Next time, though, we’ll have to schedule our neighborhood outing on a night the NCAA Tournament isn’t being played!

This morning began with the family playing games. I had fun playing Hallie in a few rounds of Crazy Eights. Kelly took off for the consignment sale and I took over with the kids. Hallie played upstairs while Travis and I went outside to continue our satellite dish project. We all went in for lunch and watched the space shuttle on TV, during which I quizzed the kids about orbits and geography.

Kelly got home soon afterward and the kids watched a movie or two. Then we got the kids on their bikes and chased them as the rode to Lions Park. At the park, we headed over to the BMX track and got to watch four or five races take place. The kids had a good time watching the bikers, with Hallie declaring that soon she would be riding that course. You go, girl!

When we returned to our neighborhood we discovered a number of neighbors out enjoying the beautiful spring weather (72 degrees, sunny, and 25% humidity). We hung out for a bit while the kids played with the neighborhood kids. It was good to visit.

I felt bad for the dog for not getting any exercise today, so I hopped on my bike and took him on a punishing pace around the neighborhood. Unlike our last run he kept up for the most part. Maybe my morning walks with him have made him fitter, I don”t know. He wasn’t a puddle for very long after we returned, either, showing a lot more energy than I expected. At any rate, it was good exercise for the both of us.

Kelly cooked a delicious supper which we enjoyed on our porch. Then we had baths for the kids and tucked them in with some stories.

It was a weekend so active it seemed like three.
