in Checking In

Non-stop day

It was quite a busy day for me. I began the day by skipping breakfast and heading out at 7 AM to get my cholesterol checked. I had to drive to the Cary lab near my doctor and had an unwelcome reunion with the concept of rush-hour traffic. It didn’t take much staring at brake lights to make me so happy I don’t face that every day.

I got done with my appointment in time to park downtown and race to my office in time for a 9 AM conference call. This was followed by an 11 AM conference call, followed by a noon conference call.

At 12:55, I walked briskly over to the City Council chambers to accept my certificate of appointment to the Parks and Rec board. Since all I’d had up to that point was a yogurt and granola bar, I promptly exited the chambers and headed to Char-Grill for a tasty, cholesterol-laden hamburger.

Then I took a lunch-break trip to Durham to learn about the Rhine’s audio setup, as I’m working sound for their Friday evening talk. While I was there I fixed the VoIP phones and took a shot a fixing the copier (no luck).

Back in the office I continued working on a training document. Then it was a quick microwaved meal at work before heading back to the Municipal Building for my Parks and Rec orientation session. I got home from orientation in time to read stories to the kids and tuck them in. Then I caught up some with Kelly before I put on my CAC hat and hopped into the car to drive around the neighborhood.

A pet peeve of mine is streetlight outages. I believe dark, untended streets attract crime, so I rode around making note of which lights were out. While I was happy to see most of them nicely shining, I still gathered a list of 15 lights that need fixing. I’ll drive through again in a few weeks to see if these lights have been repaired.

I caught the end of the presidential debates and was glad not to have seen the whole thing. I can’t stomach McCain anymore and I think Obama needs to get in touch with his inner Bubba. He’s a very smart man – smarter than a lot of American voters I might guess. He needs to be able to boil things down to what plain folks can understand. Clinton had that gift. He’s smart but he could still connect with folks, even throwing in a pleasant Southern twang every now and then. If Obama could figure out how to be smart and at the same time steal some of the “plain folk” thunder from Sarah Palin he’d win in a landslide.

Time for bed. Sleep is a wonderful thing.
