Laurence Lovette, the 17-year-old accused of murdering Eve Carson, appeared in Durham court today to be arraigned for the murder of Duke Student Abhijit Mahato.
According to the N&O, Durham District Court Judge Craig Brown “chided the media, saying they were focusing on the case because one of the victims was a young, white woman. Black crime victims, he said, don’t get nearly as much attention.”
With all due respect, Your Honor, the media is focusing on this case because Eve Carson was not simply a young white woman, but a young white woman who was student body president at one of the largest universities in the state. She was a young white woman who was going places. Eve Carson would have received as much attention if she were black, simply for who she was.
Any murder is senseless, regardless of who gets killed. To have a promising citizen like Eve Carson gunned down seems especially cruel.
