Raleigh’s Sign Nazis strike … selectively

I figured I’d get the jump on the real estate crowd by putting some for sale signs out on Durant Road in Friday morning rain. I got home that evening and they were gone: probably stolen by the City of Raleigh’s Sign Nazis.

We got another pair from the agent who put our house on MLS. I promptly put them out Friday night. By 8:30 this morning they were also gone.

I’d be okay with all of this if everyone got to play by the rules, but its not that way. At the corner of Durant and Capital, a yellow “Karate for Christ” or somesuch sign has been planted for weeks. Just a 1/4 mile up Durant, the neighboring OpenVoice church has a sign within inches of the curb – and has had it there for at least a year. Yet, it remains while my humble signs are landfill-fodder.

I can name three or more intersections where one can still find campaign signs for an election that was over in October. One can find a Jesse Taliaferro sign on the BJs fence on Capital Boulevard near Old Wake Forest Road. A lonely Mary-Ann Baldwin sign sits twisted at Falls of the Neuse and Ridge Road. Paul Anderson’s signs sit where one exits Capital Boulevard for Wake Forest Road and also at Perry Creek Rd and Highway 401. Why haven’t the Sign Nazis blitzkreiged those scofflaws?

Again, either its okay for everyone or its okay for no one. This selective enforcement stuff simply chaps my hide.

  1. not trying to be a gadfly but why do you think its the “Sign Nazis”? Is it possible that its other real estate agents or competitors selling houses?

Also, what are the laws for putting up signs?

  2. Make this contraptions with blinking lights and lots of wires. Attach them to bridges, monuments, and places of interest. Step back and wait for the real Nazis.
