The woods behind our backyard is home to multiple rabbits. At dusk yesterday, we saw a half-dozen of them running rampant throughout the neighborhood. We don’t have any plants (or grass) to speak of yet, but once we fix up our yard, these little guys will become unwelcome in a hurry.
Makes me wonder if Wake County has any plans to release foxes into the wild. That would take care of the problem pretty quickly, I think. N.C. State’s Cooperative Extension service has some good info about what to do with rabbits, too.

Unfortunately, I think that’s about as likely as the County releasing wolves and cougars to control the deer population….
Here’s a quick fix for your rabbit problem: get a dog. It will seriously discourage the rabbbits, and Hallie will have a new playmate. If you go this route, please rescue one of the “condemned inmates” from the pound.
Good call, Mike. Thanks for suggesting that!
Just make sure not to irradiate them, otherwise you will be living in a modern remake of “Night of the Lupus”, only not as cheesy!
Evil Jason! Welcome! Glad to have you here!
I forgot to mention the invasion by beetles, which is far more damaging than the rabbits, at least to my particular yard. The beetles have put a hurting on the apple tree in the front yard. I’ve only got one other tree (if you could call it that), so I’m protective of it.
I put a coating of Sevin dust on it and it seems to be doing the trick. For now.
And if you don’t like the Sevin for whatever reason, those “Bug Bags” or whatever they’re called work pretty well. Just be sure to put them away from the plants you’re trying to protect, otherwise they might be attracted to the bag, but stop off at your plants on the way there. 🙂
Thanks for the tip. I’ve seen bug bags all over the neighborhood. Now I know why! 🙂
