I was trying to explain welding to Hallie the other day when her eyes lit up. “Oh,” she said, “that’s in the ‘Undersea Water Creatures’ video!” She marched over and popped the DVD in and sure enough one of the kids on the show does some underwater welding!
A lot of the kid videos out there are lousy. Either they’re too sugary or just plain dumb. I can stand to watch very few of them. Popular Mechanics for Kids, though, is an exception.
Popular Mechanics for Kids (or PMK) was a television series which ran from 1997 to 2001. Each show focuses on some cool science topic, providing solid science education with fast-paced cuts and jazzy graphics. I can watch PMK with the kids for hours. Better yet, the kids can watch it for hours. Episodes don’t get old, either: we can watch them over and over and not get tired of them.
We decided to augment our single DVD, Super Sea Creatures, with the 6-DVD package now available at Amazon for $29.99. It provides episodes: Slither & Slime and Other Yucky Things, Super Sea Creatures and Awesome Ocean Adventures, Rip-Roaring Rollercoasters and All Access to Fun, Radical Rockets and Other Cool Cruising Machines, Gators & Dragons and Other Wild Beasts, and X-treme Sports & Other Action Adventures. You get twenty-four episodes in all.
Our set just arrived today (free shipping!). I’m as anxious to watch as the kids are!
MT.Net says check it out (and let the kids watch, too)!
Reminds me of “Mr. Wizard”. I just loved that show. Did all kinds of neat experiments from popping corks out of bottles with baking powder and water to sucking an egg into a milk bottle.
Funny you should mention Mr. Wizard. My friend Eric just mentioned it.
