About the Sargasso Sea

When I posted the Cracker song Be My Love yesterday, I became curious about the Sargasso Sea. Being a sailor, I pride myself on knowing where various seas are but I’d never heard of this one. No wonder: the Sargasso Sea is the only sea without shores.

The Sargasso Sea is the Atlantic ocean’s version of the garbage-filled North Pacific Pyre. Its a dead zone of calm winds and choking seaweed surrounded by the strong Gulf Stream, North Atlantic, and Canary currents. Its been said that the Sargasso Sea’s calm winds caused desperate Spanish sailors to jettison their horses here, after which this area became known the “horse latitudes.”

In short, the Sargasso sea’s a pretty dismal, woeful place. The mysterious fate of sailors stranded here adds considerable backstory to the legend of the Bermuda Triangle. What a perfect setting for a twisted love song, right?
