I’m shocked at the amount of damage to New Orleans from Hurricane Katrina. I’m also shocked at the devastation that swept Mississippi. New Orleans may get all the attention, but the people of Mississippi are hurting just as bad, if not worse. Those people didn’t have a lot before the hurricane. Now they’ve got even less. So sad.
At least its good to know the President is doing his part. Laissez les bon temps roulez!
He’s got to get on with his life, after all.
Instead of complaining about the President’s schedule … Why not do something productive? http://www.redcross.org/
Uh, schedules go out the window when a MAJOR DISASTER occurs. Ask the homeless people in Louisiana and Mississippi about schedules. The President had a chance to show some compassion and instead he was goofing off.
Where is the leadership? When planes are striking the World Trade Center, it’s perfectly fine to excuse yourself from reading “The Pet Goat.” Likewise, when a major American city becomes uninhabitable overnight, its okay to put down the guitar and get to work.
As for the Red Cross, we’ve already made a donation, thank you. I encourage everyone else to make one, too.
Do you REALLY think that Sleestak Kerry would have cancelled his annual Labor Day “New England Democrats” Clam Bake/Clam Raising dinner in Hyanis to be Johnny-on-the-spot in New Orleans, please? This guy would have still been trying to find the oval office bathroom at this point.
Excuse me, but WTF does John Kerry have to do with anything?
Kerry lost. Get over it.
he has nothing to do with anything…which is exactly my point…considering that he was the alternative to the Bush-bashing going on on this posting. I am no bush apologist, but we have non-elected cronies who failed in this case. The kerry reference was to point out that things could have been worse if he were in charge…but the same non-elected cronies would have failed regardless. Kerry is a TOOL. I never like the guy, and the american people should be glad we have bush and NOT kerry in this case. Regardless of the scheduling quirks during hurricane “GO TIME”. My point was just that Bush is better in these situations than Kerry would have been. Your previous blogger felt compelled to show the president at a previously scheduled engagement rather than being at Ground Zero: The Bayou. I’m sure we willbe able to see all of the Bush bashing again on Michael Moore’s upcoming biopic sequel:
Ferenheit 9/11 part Deux: The Wrath of Katrina.
That’s all.
the american people should be glad we have bush and NOT kerry in this case.
I don’t know about that. I hardly see how Kerry could have done any worse. Then again, I hardly see how ANYONE could have done any worse.
Lots of folks have pointed out how Bush ran for reelection on the premise he could “protect America” better than Kerry could. Along comes a non-scripted disaster and what happens? Bush’s response is a miserable failure. By touting security as his strong suit, he has opened himself up to criticism. He brought it upon himself.
On a related note, for Bush to say “no one anticipated the failure of the levees” is at best incredible ignorance and at worst a bald-face lie. Let’s see you defend that.
I believe that the platform he ran on “…the security of america…” was applicable to the protection against terrorism not meteorology. No one can say or would say that they can prevent monster storms from damaging the US. Much less a hundred year storm like katrina. Security is his strong suit And much stronger that that of his opponent who, by election day, would say whatever he could to get the necessary votes in that district. that is also to say that there is no level of security against such a disaster. Yes this model failed. Yes it failed because he had a fool in a key position. Yes, it was his responsibility, yes, he took blame for it.
But, has he come through with the resources, yes.
Has he put together the largest releif effort the country has ever seen yes
has he backed off of his pledges to make right that which was wronged, NO.
Please remember that it is okay to make mistakes as long ash you fess up to them. I do not excuse it, but, it makes the process much more palatable.
The failure was in his appointments. Typically, Bush has surrounded himself with people who are smarter than he is (see C. rice, c. powell, et al) However, this talent pool was much deeper in his first term. The brain trust of term 2 has vacated. What is the old washington saying “…second term cabinets are for second string players…” I fully believe this was the case. His cabinet, top to bottom is full of political allegiance appointments and old frat buddies. This was Bush’s mistake…but, this is also where he draws political capital from.
I cannot nor will i attempt to defend the presidents quote on “good morning America” it was a ridiculous quote and a stupid thing to say. But, in a sense, he was right…no ONE anticipated the breach of the levees…EVERYONE anticipated it. Not that i think that was what he meant. He has also retracted the statement since then offering that it was not what he meant. Whatever, the man is not a brain surgeon. In fact he has been given legacy exemption into just about everything inhis life. Lets see:
Yale acceptance from bush sr legacy
skull & bones acceptance from bush sr legacy
texas rangers managing partner was smallest equity partner with managing partner label
oil company he started, gift from father
the only thing he REALLY did solo was win various seats in texas.
But, regardless of his lack of intelligence on many things, i do believe he is a moral man and a man of conviction…two things I do not see in his former opponent.
there is a difference between security from terror and protection against natural disasters. I think the country is safer with him at the helm than anyone else we were offered.
Also, while i think the initail response wasw a failure, i think that the Day 2 support mechanism is staggering and the speed with which they have followed through is impressive. This was a slow start and a bungled first inning. Let’s see how the game turns out though.
while my opinion about kerrys response is only speculative and no one will know for sure, I for one, am glad we have who we have versus the other.
