1. If you’ve never read James Ennes (Liberty crewmember) book “Assault on the Liberty” you should … when I reported for duty on Guam back in the Spring of ’78 I was introducted to the Executive Officer (XO) by a First Class Petty Officer I was walking with … the XO seemed shell shocked and kinda out-of-it … we had to talk extra loud to him as well … after we were out of ear shot of the XO I asked what was up with him … Red told me that Commander Lewis was in the CT space aboard the Liberty when the Israeli torpedo came through the side … it took him years to get over the physical injuries but was still having problems … the Navy was giving him cushy jobs until he did his time and could retire.
