Happy Anniversary, Three Mile Island!

This Sunday is the twenty-fifth anniversary of the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island. I came across some witness testimonials which really got my attention. The lives of these folks changed in the early morning hours of March 28th, 1979 as they were going about their business.

Did we learn anything from the accident? Hard to say. No new nuke plants have been built in the U.S. since then, but there are plenty in operation. Training has gotten better, but by how much? Faced with dwindling or uncertain oil supplies, our energy-hungry country will need to rely on nuclear power more than ever. Is it worth the risks? I admit I don’t know.

Reading these links at least gives me an understanding of what might have occured, but it also gives me a look at what might happen again. That look ain’t pretty.

  1. Let me weigh in on this issue that’s been a concern of mine for a long time.

Nuclear Power is the way to go, environmentalists not withstanding. It’s the safest, cleanest and probably the cheapest form of energy that could run our significant power needs. If we used breeder style reactors, we would never run out of fuel. Neat stuff!

For me, nuclear accidents are like plane crashes. They happen rarely, in the case of nuclear just a handful of times, but when they do everyone knows about them.

I think too many people by into the environmental brainwashing and terrorist concerns. Those concerns are not the truth.

  2. I think we’re stuck with nuclear power, like it or not. We’re too dependent on electricity to run our modern world.

After posting this, I realized that I’m much more concerned about the report released this week showing a dramatic rise in CO2 levels in the atmosphere. Talk about trouble! All that coal and oil being burned is causing that to happen. Nukes don’t.
