Carrboro Is Clueful About WiFi

I saw on the Triangle Internetworkers list today that the Town Of Carrboro is setting up a public wireless network. This is just too cool! As Andy Vogel, the town techie in charge says, this can really encourage techie people to move there. I want to move there already!

Props to Carrboro for leading the charge on wireless access in the Triangle! If you’re interested in helping out, you can sign up at their listserv here.

Also, check out the Triangle Wireless User Group while you’re at it.

  1. So, how’s this work? Do they set up a wireless network with a long range and just let anybody use it?

yeah, yeah, I know but I don’t feel like reading all the articles.

Also, are they using the town T1 or something? Who’s bringing the content?

  2. Here’s the deal. Carrboro has a fiber-optic line through town that they don’t use much of. The WiFi access points will connect to this and go out the town’s Internet connection.

Apparently, they are letting everyone use it, too. Follow the listserv link to find posts from the techies. You’ll find lots of the nuts-and-bolts described there.

  3. Thanks! I have been alerted to an upcoming flash mob in the area. Still deciding if I want to participate, or if this is a fad I’m better off letting pass me by. 🙂

  4. The sig in that last comment was just too blantant… can’t you mod this stuff out?
