in Checking In

Great three day weekend

I took the day off Friday thinking I would be going to the Rush concert with my brother. Once the date was moved, I opted to take the family to the North Carolina Zoo instead. Before I left, though, I welcomed two new neighbors to the neighborhood.

We made it to the zoo around lunchtime. After buying our season membership, the first thing we did was eat our lunch on the member deck. It was fun remembering the last time we had all eaten there: strollers were involved!

We got to see all the animals we wanted to and there were no crowds in the park. It helped that it wasn’t blazingly hot out there as it is in the summer. We had a good time and took it easy for the rest of the night.

Saturday I spent out in the yard working on my garden area. I’d bought a bunch of landscape timbers over the past two weeks and had assembled them into a terrace to level out my planting area. I worked to hammer and saw them together with the help of Travis.

After 2 PM we headed to Hallie’s soccer game at the field in Wake Forest. Hallie’s Dynamos played the only other undefeated team in the league … and beat them! Hallie scored the winning goal, too, winning the game 3-2.

From the soccer game we went right home and Kelly and I got ready for my dad’s birthday dinner party. We arrived late, having recalled the wrong time, but had a great meal and a great time. Then my whole family came over to our house and spent another two hours just hanging around. That was the highlight of my night.

Sunday was more building. I finished the construction part of the garden area and began shoveling the fill dirt I’d gotten into place, again with the help of Travis. At 1 PM Travis had his T-ball practice, so we drove to Millbrook Exchange Park for that. I enjoyed being an “assistant coach” for the team.

Today I head north for a work trip, but I feel happy and rested from the sunny, fun-filled long weekend!

  1. Isn’t your Dad’s birthday in February? Just decide to celebrate when the weather is nice?

  2. Weather is better now for a birthday anyway. As we both know… 🙁
