Ride a train from Spencer to Charlottesville and back!

During my last swing past the North Carolina Transportation Museum, I asked one of the staff members there if they were going to run another excursion train anytime soon. He couldn’t give me a firm answer and I was worried I’d missed my chance.

Woo-hoo! I found out today that the museum will be running another excursion passenger train this fall! Its called the Virginia Autumn Flyer and will make the round-trip between Spencer and Charlottesville on November 1st and 2nd of this year.

If you’ve ever wondered what it was like to ride the rails in the golden age of railroads, this is your chance. Ride in a classic, restored railcar in coach class, or travel in style in either First Class or a scenic Dome car. I believe dining cars will also be part of the train.

The trip up and back will take all day and tickets will be significantly higher than than your typical ride at New Hope Valley: probably between $100-200, depending on the class of service. Even so, it will be a memorable ride. Certainly a scenic one, full of great photo opportunities.

If you’d like to be updated on the details of the Virginia Autumn Flyer, email your contact information to the email address development at nctrans dot org. Sign up now, because tickets will sell out.

All aboard!

  1. Since you like old trains have you visited the N&W museum in Roanoke Virginia? Understand they are not doing so well so may not stay open much longer.

  2. Scott: Well, no. The page I linked to describes the 2007 train. There is no page for the 2008 one (and no tickets sold yet, AFAIK).

Ron: I do want to get up to the N&W Museum because they have an awesome steam train on display there. Any excuse to visit Roanoke is a good one!

  3. why didn’t you mention that! I was all excited, then bummed, now excited again! You are not very nice, Mr Turner 🙂
