Pine Mountain

We’re in Pine Mountain, Georgia this weekend for the Turner family reunion. We’re staying at the Pine Mountain Club Chalet ..uh, “resort,” with a nice cabin right on the lake. The weather has been sunny and hot, with the exception of yesterday evening when afternoon thunderstorms cooled things down.

I am particularly enjoying this trip because I was last here the summer I met Kelly, ten years ago. I could not have imagined that the next time I would return I would be married and the father of two wonderful kids. The cabins haven’t changed but I sure have!

We ate a country breakfast at Callaway Gardens’ Country Store this morning and followed it up with a tour of Callaway’s famous gardens. After a walk around the vegetable gardens, flower gardens, and butterfly center, we stopped in our cabin for lunch before heading out to catch Callaway’s Birds of Prey presentation.

It was too hot for all but a few birds to perform so our show was cut short. That was a mixed blessing as the seating was almost entirely in the sweltering sun. We hot-footed ourselves over to the big top to watch the FSU Flying High Circus put on its first show of the season.

The big top offered little escape from the heat, which seemed to affect the performance, too. We passed on an opportunity to meet the performers to head back to the cool cabin for some afternoon naps.

We’ll soon wake the kids and get them ready for a dip in the pool. Then we’ll have our “official” reunion event tonight, with lots of food, conversation, and home-grown music. After a good night’s sleep, we’ll drive the eight hours back home so that the kids can start their first day of camp Monday morning.

Pictures, for your voyeurs out there, can be found here, and here.
